Gee Whiz!

This morning, I was poking around the blogosphere, and I came across MightyGirl's blog (you must go read it. She's phenomenal) who linked back to Finslippy's blog (another fun read. These two are definitely better bloggers than I could aspire to be) with a discussion on words that aren't used any more, but should be. And as I was looking through the comments with reader contributions, I realized I am clearly living in the wrong decade (possibly century.) Why, you ask? Because I use some of these words all the damn time!

Here are some word/phrases that I think should be brought back, or that I already use:

As was discussed on the afore mentioned blogs: conniption. Conniption is just simply a great word. I use it almost daily. I have conniptions on a regular basis, as well.

Hornswoggle. I use this word pretty regularly. Or dupe. Generally when discussing lil' beastie and some stunt I've pulled to sucker him into behaving.

Swell. Yes. I say swell. A lot. I'm not ashamed.

Gee Whiz! Even better when combined with swell: "Aww, gee whiz! That's mighty swell of you!"

I like golly, too. I just haven't quite gotten that one fully back into rotation.

caddywhumpus: when things are out of order, they are caddywhumpus. Or cockeyed. Or cockamamie.

Melarchy. Oh yeah. You can just back right off with your load of melarchy. (don't even know if I spelled that one right!)

Drat. There could be some argument for dagnabbit, gee willigers, or even daggoneit. But there's something about drat. I find it simple, yet eloquent.

Same for phooey.

Sass. As in "Was that sassing I just heard? Don't you sass me!" I think I say this about 6400 times a day.

Aces. "How's everything going today?" "Just aces!" or: "have you met Tom? He is aces in my book!" So much better than peachy keen.

I also like groovy, marvy and ducky.

Coo-coo-ca-choo! (*sings* Mrs. Robinson, Jesus loves you more than you will know...whoa whoa whoa...Or, I am the egg man, I am the egg man...whatever) I do also say this on a regular basis. Why? I don't know. Maybe because it's fun to say.

I'm also fond of hussy, trollop, floozy and jezebel - with hussy being my personal favorite.

I like shenanigans and hijinks. (Who doesn't love hijinks?) And if you're causing hijinks, shouldn't you go gallivanting around to do it?

And, maybe I've been to one too many Renaissance Faires, but I am partial to cheering huzzah! when things go well.

That's all I can think of for now. What do you wish we could be using again? Or, what do you use now, that you think we should all be using?

I say phooey all the time! But, those others, I don't use very often. Even though they are pretty aces/swell. :-)

Oh my Sylvia. For such a hip girl you have one heck of an outdated vocab! ;)

Have a great weekend!

Amy: Aces is a great word!! Seriously. Try it for a week. It will make everyone you talk to smile. (Actually, so will any of these words!)

Marina: I know. I'm so hopelessly un-cool sometimes it's sick. But on the other hand, it's kind of become my thing. And like I told Amy, when you use a word like "aces" or "golly" - it makes people either smile or laugh. And that can't be all bad!

I think every single one of the words you mentioned is in my daily vocab. Mostly replaceing all the four letter words that were so common in my pre-children days. LOL
funny thing is I don't usually use them in my blog typing... maybe a few but Cockamamie (one of my all-time faves) would just be too long to type LOL!
